Definition of RAM

RAMRAM which is the abbreviation of Random Access Memory is a computer hardware that functions to store datas and program instructions. Unlike magnetic tape or disk that access data sequentially, the contents of RAM can be accessed randomly or not to refer to the arrangement of data. The data in RAM is temporary, in other words the data stored will be lost if the computer is switched off or the power supply connected to it is revoked.

RAM is also called main memory, primary memory, internal memory, primary storage, memory stick, or RAM stick. In fact, sometimes people just call it as memory even though there are other types of memory installed in the computer.

RAM is one of the types of internal memory that supports the processor speed in processing data and instructions. By using the additional RAM into the computer can generate a positive influence on computer speed and performance, although the RAM is not really determine the speed of the computer.

RAM memory modules are general trading with capacity of 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB and 4 GB.

Types of RAM:

DRAM DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory)
is the type of RAM that stores each bit of data separately in capacitor within an integrated circuit. The data contained in it must be refreshed periodically by the CPU so that it is not lost. This makes it very dynamic compared to other memory. In structure, the DRAM requires only one transistor and capacitor per bit, so it has a very high density.
SRAM SRAM (Static Random Access Memory)
is the type of RAM (a type of semiconductor memory) which does not use capacitor. This results in SRAM does not need to be refreshed periodically as with DRAM. It also makes it gets a higher speed than DRAM. Based on its function, it is divided into Asynchronous and Synchronous.
EDORAM EDORAM (Extended Data Out Random Accses Memory)
is the type of RAM that can store and retrieve the contents of memory simultaneously, so that its write and read speed becomes faster. Generally used as a substitute of Fast Page Memory (FPM) RAM in old PC.
SDRAM SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random Acces Memory)
is the type of dynamic RAM which is faster than EDORAM. Its piece consists of 168 pins. This RAM is synchronized by the clock system and is suitable for system with bus speed up to 100 MHz.
RDRAM RDRAM (Rambus Dynamic Random Acces Memory)
is one type of synchronous dynamic RAM which is produced by Rambus Corporation using Bus Speed of 800 MHz but has a narrow data path (8 bit). RDRAM has a sophisticated memory controller so that not all motherboards can support it.
NV-RAM NV-RAM (Non-Volatile Random Access Memory)
is the type of RAM in which uses Lithium battery so the data stored will not be lost even if power supply is turned off.
VGRAM (Video Graphic Random Acces Memory)
is a type of RAM that is made specifically for video adapter. VGRAM capacity will determine the quality of images generated by the video adapter.
